Proton beam applications

In the framework of a collaboration with several Belgian universities the feasibility of extending the application field of the high power proton accelerator is being investigated, in particular in the field of fundamental nuclear physics studies.

Several scenarios are studied. These include sending a small portion (10-100 µA) of the high intensity proton beam to a dedicated irradiation station for nuclear physics applications.

Alternatively, the use of the full beam during scheduled maintenance period of the MYRRHA spallation target and primary system will be looked into. The availability of these proton beams will be put in the broader scope of nuclear-physics research in Europe.
