MEGAPIE, a window spallation target experiment

 MEGAPIE

The liquid metal spallation target is one of the main components in MYRRHA. That is why SCK•CEN decided to join the MEGAPIE project in 2001, which aims to design and operate a first-of-a-kind megawatt liquid Pb-Bi spallation target. The table below compares the main parameters of both the MEGAPIE and MYRRHA target. Although specific differences exist between both targets (window versus windowless), there is a general correspondence which is related to the fact that both targets use liquid Pb-Bi as target material. Pb-Bi technology developed for the MEGAPIE target can therefore easily be translated to the MYRRHA application: electromagnetic pumping, heat exchanger design, Pb-Bi conditioning, corrosion protection, ...

With the successful completion of the irradiation phase in 2006, MEGAPIE has proven that safe operation of a megawatt Pb-Bi spallation target is possible, making the licensing of future ADS systems easier. For more information: http://megapie.web.psi.ch
