The MYRRHA subcritical fast core and its whole series of internals as well as the operation equipment should be installed in an air-controlled environment. The re-use of existing facilities was found impossible, these facilities being not compatible with the Remote Handling philosophy presented elsewhere. A new building has therefore to be erected on the SCK•CEN Mol site. This building is quite large (100 m length, 30 m width, 40 m height; this height being subdivided, in the "reference" configuration, into 10 m above ground level and 30 m underground). The construction of such large and heavy building is a challenge in itself. For a more detailed view, check out the civil engineering. |

At present time we have found one main location on the SCK•CEN site for installing the MYRRHA building, its accelerator and the related auxiliaries. To have a look, proceed to site plan. Another required feature of the building is what one calls in jargon the shielding: the building must shield the neighbourhood of radioactive radiation during operation, but also in case of an accident. For more information on the shielding and the related calculations, have a look here. |
