A crucial point in the development of the spallation target is the demonstration of safe and stable operation of the free PbBi surface under the irradiation with a high power proton beam. In particular the issue of possible enhanced evaporation as well as possible free surface distortion or shockwave effects in nominal conditions and during sudden beam on/off transient situations needs to be addressed. |
